For those people who grow their own food, or purchase bulk produce to reduce costs, it becomes necessary to find a way to preserve that food for later consumption. Although canning used to be a common family practice, our modern, high-tech lifestyles have isolated us from the source of our nutrition. My parents were able to stretch the food budget by canning many different items each year because (I'm told) my brothers and I "ate like locusts".
